NOTES FROM RANDY
Welcome back, everyone, and HAPPY NEW YEAR! You may have noticed we took the last week off. Apologies for the last minute pause, but it ended up being a much more stress-filled week than I may have thought at first. Along with getting some sort of cold, Jason and I just decided it would be best to take some time to regroup during the week of Christmas.
BUT, we’re back!
And here it is; Colton’s first showdown since his fight with Harker graced the pages (and cover) of Chapter 3. And if you’re here, then you must have read the ending to that tussle. So maybe Colton IS much better prepared for this battle than we might think?
Though Penny’s irresistible force of an ability might have something more to say about that.
Also, this page serves as another first for Colton. Though the script didn’t call for it (sorry Jason), I felt to really show the power of Colton from one panel to the next, we needed that fourth wall break. When I was designing the page, there was just so much going on that I wanted to give every action its time to shine. I think Colton throwing Penny through a wall really got conveyed quite well through this.
And while I don’t have anything overly special to share about lore here, I did want to mention where the original inspiration for Penny’s powers came from.
Years ago when Jason and I were developing the characters and their powers, we knew out key cast needed someone with an almost indestructible ability. As you may remember from a previous look behind the scenes that I wrote, Jason and I were looking for inspiration everywhere around us. That led us to this:
I owned (still do) a black, tungsten carbide ring that, if you’ve ever held one you’d know, could be used as a knuckle duster and never even bend or break. The way I remember it was that Jason took note of the weight and sturdiness of my ring, and we started our talk about what it could do. I *think* we came up with something like a power that would be akin to Colossus in the X-Men. After several iterations, including some where even her clothing became metallic, we decided on where we are now.
Though, as things go, you never know if that’s how she’ll stay throughout the book. I’ve tossed a few other ideas to Jason for his thoughts, and though we haven’t really discussed if further, I think there just may be a “super saiyan” form for Penny.
And I totally never drew a sketch of what was in my head for this form.
Like no, seriously. I didn’t.
…
…
Seriously, would you leave it alone?
…
…
…
Really? Okay, fine. MAYBE I DID SKETCH AN IDEA OUT ONCE. JUUUUST MAYBE.
Okay, here it is:
So this is DEFINITELY NOT DEFINITE, but it was just an idea I floated once. And honestly, I just love sharing my sketches that no one ever sees but me and maybe one other person. This is one of those.
So thanks for hanging out, and again, happy new year to you and yours! Jason will be back with you on Thursday.
